Introducing Spectrum. More Than Just Sudoku
Spectrum originated from the classic Sudoku
puzzles that have entertained and challenged countless people around the world. Spectrum has already developed a life
of its own, consisting of three distinct games, including two multiplayer games that go beyond regular sudoku.
Three
Games in One: Spectrum Solitaire, Team Spectrum & Spectrum Challenge.
History of the Game:
October 2005 After being introduced to Sudoku while visiting his daughter in Los Angeles, Jack Hohenstein came
up with the first version of Team Spectrum using
colors rather than numbers. Team Spectrum allowed for a multiplayer format so that a group of people could enjoy playing together.
Jack shared his new game
idea with his son Mike. Being the youngest of seven siblings and well acquainted with competition, Mike naturally
came up with a way to make the game competitive. Spectrum Challenge was the result.
Using colored paper squares and a sectioned off portion of one of the most famous board games of all time, Jack and Mike
tested and played the games with the whole family over the Thanksgiving weekend.
December 2005 The game was a hit. Over the next month,
Jack's son, John, designed the board shown below. Replacing the paper squares with flat glass marbles, and the plastic
board with a routed wood playing surface. The flat glass marbles seemed a logical choice, but finding the nine
distinct colors of was more than a trip to the craft store. After locating the right stones and after piles of sawdust and puddles of
stain, the first games were ready.
The game board and stones allowed Jack to
dig deeper into the basis of Sudoku.
A retired math teacher, he began creating his own puzzles. All the puzzles provided in the instruction booklet
for Spectrum Solitaire have been created by Jack and are not computer generated.
January 2006 Mike hit the bricks soon after the new year in search of a manufacturer
to help bring the game to market. Spectrum. More Than Just Sudoku has
been licensed exclusively to Wood Expressions Inc. of Gardena, CA. The prototype debuted in February 2007 at Toy Fair in New York, and first
run production games hit the market place in December 2007. We hope that you and your family will enjoy the game as
much as we do.
